What it is

Next Step Wireless IFE is a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) system. Passengers use the phone, tablet or laptop they already carry, so your aircraft needs no seatback screens.

The server on board and the passenger screens come from BFBS, our technology partner. Next Step signs the contract with you and is your single point of contact.

How it works, from boarding to landing

  1. Connect

On boarding, the passenger connects a phone, tablet or laptop to the cabin wireless network, named for your airline.

  2. Open

A welcome screen opens on their device and shows the programmes for the flight.

  3. Watch

The passenger chooses a programme and watches it on their own device, at their own pace. The programmes are served from the server on board.

  4. Arrive

By the time the flight lands, the passenger has watched what they chose, and your airline has given them something to enjoy on the way.

Two ways to take it

With content from Next Step CSP. The system comes with programmes from Next Step CSP: documentaries from Next Step Studios, and selected titles from other producers where rights are clear. Rights are cleared before delivery, and files are formatted to your system's specification. For routes up to 5 hours, our ready-made streaming VOD service is Doxzilla Inflight.

System only, on request. If you already have a CSP, ask us about the system on its own, used with content from your airline's own CSP. We talk it through with you and your CSP.

What your airline gets

Entertainment on board without seatback screens. One contract and one company to call, from content through delivery. A system your content team can refresh on its own cycle, with content from Next Step CSP or, on request, from your own CSP.

Audio, subtitles and the language of the passenger screen are tailored to your airline, and agreed per route and per title. Today's catalogue has Thai and English audio. Other languages are produced on request.

We plan to add anonymised viewing reports, so your team can plan the next cycle from what passengers chose. We are working out the details with BFBS.

  • Anonymised viewing reports (we are building these)

Who does what

  • Your airline

Chooses the aircraft and the routes. Your engineering and safety teams review the system and sign off on onboard use, under your own policy and your regulator's rules. Your crew briefs passengers. Your content team sets the cycle and gives us your content policy.

  • BFBS

Our technology partner from the United Kingdom. BFBS is responsible for the server on board and for the passenger UX/UI, the screens and the way passengers use them.

  • Next Step

Signs the contract with you and is your single point of contact. Provides content through Next Step CSP, and makes documentaries to order through Next Step Studios. Prepares documents with you and works with your teams from the opening meeting to delivery.

Who is BFBS

BFBS, the British Forces Broadcasting Service, is a media organisation and military charity. It first broadcast from Algiers in 1943 and has served British forces for more than 80 years, with their families worldwide, bringing trusted media to people who are far from home.

BFBS runs entertainment for service personnel aboard ships, aircraft and submarines. A submarine is an environment that demands harder technology, so BFBS has long worked where conditions are strict.

In April 2026 BFBS announced a ten-year contract with the UK Government to continue that work. For Next Step Wireless IFE, BFBS supplies the onboard server and the passenger screen. Every aircraft installation needs the approval of the airline and its aviation authority.

Questions airlines ask us

  • Who do we sign with, and who answers when something goes wrong?

You sign one contract with Next Step, and Next Step is your single point of contact. Next Step is responsible for the content and its delivery. BFBS is responsible for the server on board and the passenger UX/UI. We set out each party's responsibilities in the contract.

  • What documents do you give our engineering and safety teams?

We provide a technical pack on request. It is prepared for your aircraft types together with BFBS, and we send it to your engineering and safety teams. Onboard use is reviewed and signed off by your teams under your policy and your regulator's rules. We prepare the documents with you and work with your teams through the process.

  • What if a passenger has no device?

Next Step Wireless IFE is designed for passengers' own devices. We do not offer loan devices today. If your aircraft has seatback screens, Next Step CSP documentaries can reach them through your inflight entertainment system.

  • Can we use the system with our own content provider?

Ask us. System only, used with content from your airline's own CSP, is available on request. We talk it through with you and your CSP.

  • How is it priced, and what does our airline get commercially?

Commercial terms are flexible and depend on your routes, your fleet and the kind of contract. Talk to our team.

  • Which aircraft, how long does installation take, and what does it involve?

It depends on your aircraft type and fleet. We give the aircraft types covered, the installation steps and the time per aircraft in the technical pack, prepared with BFBS for your fleet. Request the pack and we will start from your aircraft list.

  • How does it fit with the CSP we already have?

Next Step Studios can license documentaries through your existing CSP, and you keep your provider. Next Step Wireless IFE is for airlines that want a wireless system. You can take it with content from Next Step CSP or, on request, with content from your own CSP.
